ICANN Concludes Asia/Pacific Registry/Registrar Regional Gathering
On 10-11 September 2008, ICANN hosted its third Asia/Pacific regional gathering in Seoul, Korea. And, since that time, ICANN has conducted annually three outreach events ? one each in [...]

oday ICANN releases a paper with the title "DNSSEC @ ICANN - Signing the root zone: A way forward toward operational readiness". ICANN GNSO Votes to Kill Domain Tasting
The ICANN Generic Names Supporting Organization has had tasting on its agenda since last fall, with a staff report issued in January, and a proposed anti-tasting policy written in March. On Thursday the 17th, the GNSO put the proposed policy to a vote, and it passed overwhelmingly. Under ICANN rules, the ICANN board has to take up the resolution at its next meeting, and since it was approved by a supermajority, it becomes ICANN policy unless 2/3 of the board votes against it, which in this case is unlikely. Dot-Mania: ICANN Opens the Domain Door
Since the original seven domain "dots" were established, the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN;
www.icann.org) has expanded the number of generic top level domains (gTLDs) only rarely. But by 2Q 2009, adding new dot domains could start expanding rapidly. Last week, at an annual meeting in Paris, ICANN approved a recommendation that would add many new domain names, as well as expanding the languages and character sets for internationalized domain names. The nuts and bolts of processing the expansion will not appear until the final version of the implementation plan is approved by the ICANN board in early 2009. Complex and challenging issues remain before them following "principles of fairness, transparency, and non-discrimination," as well as technical issues to insure the stability of the domain name system—as my interview with former ICANN chair Vinton Cerf confirms. However, the potential impact over the years of a massive

In a major change to the domain name system, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced a draft plan (or Guidebook) that will allow for applications for new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) and is seeking comment from interested parties.
“Since ICANN was founded 10 years ago, one of the foundational principles has been to support competition and consumer choice in generic top-level domains. That competition is meant to promote innovation and enhance user choice and satisfaction” said Dr Paul Twomey, ICANN’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

Lawyers, analysts: ICANN vote will cause URL chaos
The decision to allow custom top-level domains will be a 'nightmare' for brand managers, analysts and lawyers have warned. On Thursday, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) voted to allow--in addition to more traditional top-level domains (TLDs), such as .com and .org--theoretically any TLD at all, as long as it is no longer than 64 characters long. The application process for such custom TLDs looks set to be arduous and the criteria reasonably rigorous, but observers say the new system will

New Generic Top-Level Domains and Internet Standards
The recent decision by ICANN to start a new round of applications for new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) is launching a round of questions on the IETF side about its consequences. One possible issue may be with vanity gTLDs like apple, ebay etc. Some expect that every Fortune 1,000,000 company will apply for its own TLD. My guess is rather the Fortune 1,000 for a start, but this does change the nature of the issue, i.e. those companies may want to use email addresses like user@tld. More...

Forget the domain name hype; just protect your name
Last week the proposal to allow a new breed of internet domains triggered talk of another “internet gold rush”. I’m not sure this is going to happen, however it is a timely reminder of the importance of protecting your own business name. The Global Top Level Domains (gLTDs) are the suffixes such as .com and .net at the end of internet addresses. There are 22 of these and they are controlled by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which is chaired by an Australian, Dr Paul Twomey. ICANN has proposed to make new gLTDs available to anyone who makes a suitable application. So somebody can apply to create a .smartcompany or .australia domain to replace the boring old .com or .com.au. I have to admit my first reaction

New Languages Added to ICANN's IDN Wiki
MARINA DEL REY, Calif.: Hebrew and Amharic speakers now have dedicated wiki pages to share their experiences as a part of the global evaluation of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) being done by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. "Since its launch in October 2007, the IDN wiki has helped ICANN and the Internet community look at exactly how IDNs operate in the root, and how different software handles domain names in characters from different scripts," said Tina Dam, ICANN’s IDN Program Director. "We’re hoping that Internet users who understand Hebrew and Amharic will access these wiki pages and share their experiences." The IDN wiki was initially based on 11 example.test domains in Arabic, Persian, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Russian, Hindi, Greek, Korean, Yiddish, Japanese and Tamil. The wiki allows Internet users to establish their own subpages with their own names in their own language such as example.test/yourname.

Government opposes .xxx domains
ADULT entertainment companies seeking to operate internet red light districts would face resistance from the Rudd Labor government.
The government said it would oppose their creation when they become available under the global internet regulator's new scheme to allow registration of generic top-level-domains (gTLDs).
The domain names, which would be created to accommodate adult content, are expected to be in high demand when the world's internet names regulator, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), starts accepting applications next February.
Each could net ICANN tens of millions of dollars and several Australian companies are believed to be among those which have expressed strong interest in registering them.
AusRegistry, which operates Australia's peak domain registry for .au, has revealed that it has been approached by several entities planning to apply to register adult-themed gTLDs including, .xxx and .sex.

ICANN Votes No To Tasting
Domain tasting is the disreputable practice of registering lots of domains, seeing how much traffic they get, and then using the five day Add Grace Period to refund the 99.9% of them that aren’t worth paying for. A related abuse is front running, registrars speculatively grabbing domains that people inquire about to prevent them from using a different registrar.

Why New TLDs Don't Change a Thing
I have a heard a lot lately about ICANN unanimously voting in favor or relaxing top level domain rules and had a few people come to me and ask 'how does that affect what you do?' The short answer is, it won't; at least not for a long time and here is why... There might be some huge potential gain if all shoe companies got .shoes and branded it, but someone would have to manage it and each would have to spend money to brand .shoes to consumers. Adidas gets adidas.shoes but spends nothing to brand it and lets Nike pay to brand .shoes and Reebok to brand it as well and leech. Tips to Protect Your Brand in the New Domain Name Marketplace
Over time, people have grown accustomed to most Web site addresses ending in .com, .edu or .gov. Yet a proposed expansion of the generic top-level domain (gTLD) space by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will change the way we look at domain names forever.
In the months ahead, the domain-name landscape will undergo a revolutionary change by allowing a virtually unlimited number of gTLDs—the string of characters after the dot in every Web address. Rather than being limited to .com, .net, .org or other commonly recognized TLDs, any .ourbrand top-level domain will be possible.
For businesses, this change means that protecting their trademarks and searching for and watching gTLDs will become increasingly complex. For consumers, the change is designed to provide greater transparency about domain owners and make it simpler to navigate the Web.
However, before that simplicity can be achieved, there is complexity—and uncertainty—to sort out. What will the final form of the gTLD process be? What are the real risks and opportunities for companies?
Most importantly, what should businesses be doing to prepare?
Determine how generic top-level domains fit with your brand strategy.
There is only one chance to protect your
